Channel Islands Harbor Report

Peter O'Sullivan and I arrived at Channel Islands Harbor this morning to see the Small Craft Warning Flag flying at the Coast Guard Station. The wind was blowing about 20 knots at that time and on the rise. The swells were several feet larger than normal and crashing over the breakwater. We launched and headed out to see what the conditions were like outside of the harbor.
At the end of the jetty we could clearly see a fast muddy current sweeping by. As soon as Peter turned the corner I could see that it was rough there. His head kept disappearing in the chop and he was paddling like mad. But he was able to make some headway. We played in the crazy water for an hour until we got tired paddling into the wind and current. It took a strong effort just to stay in one place. Then we took a long paddle out to the end of the breakwater. It is normally a quick 5 minute paddle from where we started, but it seemed like it took forever to get there. I tried to take some pictures of Peter rolling in the soup but it just wasn't possible. I would either get knocked over or blown out of picture-taking range whenever I attempted to grab the camera off my deck.
At the end of the breakwater we played in the wash-over and then let the wind blow us back to the jetty. We spent the rest of the morning touring the harbor and then went to our favorite Sushi spot for lunch.
Best,
