Did I mention I love kayaking? Last Sunday John Petersen and myself met at Channel Islands Harbor to paddle in the surf and demo John’s new rolling kayak. The day looked like it would shape up well as I saw many cars with surf boards on my ride to Oxnard.
John brought his new rolling kayak, which surprisingly he had never paddled. The rolling kayak was completed and had its maiden voyage at TAKS, 2009. This is another piece of beautiful floating art created by John in conjunction with Maligiaq Padilla. Along with being a 7-time world champ roller and paddler, Maligiaq is also very well known for his kayak building skills with more than 70 skin on frame boats built to his credit.
The day did not disappoint as we rounded the jetty to see the swirling water and large surf coming into the pond. The swell was pushing from all directions and picked us up and pushed us into the pond, surfing swells parallel to the shore is always an unusual feeling. It was great fun to play in the large surf, avoid a pounding, and roll and brace through the swirling, bumpy water.
After our traditional paddle rounding back outside the breakwater, we returned to our launch point. John was ready to try some hand rolls in the new boat and pulled off 10 or so in a row not missing any. This was too much for me to stand, so it was my turn next. The new roller is a snug fit with no foot pegs. Its double masik thigh braces provide a tight fit with little wiggle room. The rear deck sits just about level with the water. The low freeboard of the rear deck made this Qayaq easy to roll, static brace, and norsaq roll.
Another great day on the water. Did I mention I love kayaking?
