Gray Whale at CIH

Today I saw my first gray whale of the season, heading South, INSIDE of the breakwater at Channel Islands Harbor. I was looking at some birds on the breakwater wall when I heard the PUFFT! behind me. I turned around, and only maybe 20 yards behind me was a huge gray whale, brown colored and covered in barnacles, moving at a brisk pace.
I sat there in shock for too long, maybe 20 seconds, then realized I had my camera. I took chase, but it was too late. It was gone.
At the time, it was a warm and sunny day at CIH, and the tide was going out, it was rather low already, so I was able to see the bottom in that part of the outer harbor. My point is that it did not look very deep where the whale was traveling, which was interesting.
Sincerely,
