CANCELLED! Lake Lopez-Kayak & Boat-in camping

Saturday April 10 to Monday April 12, 2010

Event Type:  Trip
Departure Time:  CANCELLED
Organized By:  Paula C. & Ralph Sutter
Sorry this trip is CANCELLED! We'll try to plan it at another time.

Mark your calendar now for April 10-11th then contact me if you want to join us.

Lopez Lake has one boat-in only camp, Encinal. It is located on the Lopez Arm of the lake. It is a 3.5 mile paddle from the public power boat launch ramp. Boat-in campers can leave their vehicle in the parking lot at the launch ramp.

This kayak/camping trip is designed for the person who has not packed everything into their boat to camp or has limited experience doing this.

Encinal has a small dock. The campground itself is about 150 yards inland from the lake. The shaded campground features two picnic tables and a fire ring. There are many large trees. There is a public outhouse perhaps 200 yards from the campsite. Neither the campsite nor the outhouse has running water. You must pack out your trash. While open fires are permitted in season, gathering of firewood is not. You will need to bring what you burn.

Besides the Encinal boat-in camp, there are 354 campsites in the greater Lopez Lake campground. Many overlook the lake, and others are nestled amongst picturesque oaks. There are primitive, electrical and full hook-up campsites available. Hot shower facilities are at several campgrounds.

We have a limited number of parking spaces (10) for the Encinal group site. If we get more vehicles than what the site allows folks can get a regular campsite and paddle in and camp with us.

Some of us will camp on Friday, making our own camping arrangements. Plan on Saturday morning is to pack all our gear in our boats at the launch ramp, paddle to the group site, set up camp, then paddle the area, returning back to our group site.

We need to have at least 5 vehicles to make this a cost effective trip. We encourage carpooling for this reason. Cost will be $36 per vehicle with up to 6 persons in a vehicle for 2 nights of camping, Saturday and Sunday. Kayaks entering the park are charged $5 each payable at the time of entry.

Thanks to our local resident and host of this fine paddle and campout, Ralph Sutter.
Contact me to save a spot for you.
More information will follow after I hear from you.

DIRECTIONS to Lopez Lake
"The park is 184 miles north from Los Angeles and 254 miles south from San Francisco. Driving north or south on Highway 101 take the Grand Avenue Exit in Arroyo Grande. Turn east towards the mountains and drive through old town Arroyo Grande to Huasna Road. Turn right onto Huasna Road which turns into Lopez Drive. Stay on Lopez Drive for approximately 10 miles. At this point the road ends at the entrance to Lopez Lake. (Signs are posted along the way.)"
