Morro Bay Kayak/Kampout Weekend

Friday October 6 to Sunday October 8, 2006

Event Type:  Multi-day Paddle
Departure Time:
Organized By:  Paula
The plan is to drive up to Morro Bay State Park on Friday, set up camp, take a walk to the harbor, bike, explore town or just make new friends around the campfire.

We will reserve six camp sites at Morro Bay State Park, limited to a maximum of twelve vehicles for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 6, 7 and 8th.

Priorities will be given to fully paid-up CKF members.

Saturday morning we'll drive to the put-in on the up-hill side of the tide. High tide is at 10:37am so put-in can be at the little launch area across from the state park. If we put-in by 9am traveling through the estuary we can ride the tide out. Low tide is about 5pm.

Saturday evening we'll bring our favorite camp-out main courses, appetizers, desserts and other marvelous edible creations to share and impress each other with!

Bring firewood for great campfire stories! Smores too?

Sunday morning we can sleep-in and do a repeat of Saturday morning except leave the launch area by 10am and go in the direction of the Rock....that's Morro Rock! Sightings of otters are very common near the rock.

High tide is 11:11am on Sunday morning so we will have a little push going northwest. On the way back we should have the wind to our backs.

Bring firewood for this evenings campfire.

Potluck or dinner can be out to a local restaurant for clam chowder or our favorite dish? Let me know your preference when you RSVP and we'll plan for it.

Monday morning we'll break camp and explore the rest of Morro Bay by foot, bike or maybe take-in the Museum.

Directions to Morro Bay State Park:

Going north or south on Highway 1,exit onto South Bay Blvd going south.

Turn Right onto State Park Road. Morro Bay State Park will be on your right across the street from the marina.

So why am I planning a Morro Bay campout a second time this year? Simple..... It's the best time of the year to paddle in Central California. I'm sure you've heard of the Indian Summers. This is that time. Very mild days and evenings and not much wind are the usual.

Also, this is one of my favorite places to paddle! And it's great for the beginner and experienced paddlers/campers. Checkout our website www.ckf.org under "trip reports" for previous fun trips to Morro Bay.

CAUTIONS

Please keep in mind we are dealing with Mother Nature. This is Central California, it does get colder than So. Cal so please plan accordingly. If we need to change our paddling plans due to weather and/or for the sake of safety, we will.

This is a CKF event and the usual cautions apply. All paddlers must WEAR their PFDs while in their boat. Those paddling sit-in boats wear spray skirts. This time of year the water temperature ranges from 55 to 60 degrees - quite chilly. Wet suits are recommended - Attention-getting whistles are an additional safety factor must-have!

Everyone is responsible for his or her own safety.

CKF Waivers must be understood and signed by all participants.

This part of the California coast/bay can be very calm (sometimes) but don't expect it, expect the unexpected and please prepare for it with all your safety gear aboard your vessel. If you have a working VHF radio please bring it. If you have a GPS I'm sure you'll want to bring that along too.

ADDITIONAL CAMPING INFO & COSTS

We will reserve six (6) campsites for the first 12 CKF members that register. We're allowed 2 vehicles per site, 8 people per site.

We will have a standby-by list for non-CKF members.

Cost to CKF members will be $50.00 per vehicle for 3 nights of camping/kayaking.
