Seventeen paddlers of all skill levels met this morning for an 0855 briefing before launching off a crowded beach into waters full of divers and swimmers looking at the sharks and rental kayaks to get wet.
This was a basic day and before we ended almost everybody had mastered the wet exit, t-rescue, paddle float self rescue and some towing techniques. For those of higher skill levels this was just practice, for some this was a day met with some trepidation.
Afterwards we adjourned to our house for some pizza, salad, beer and soft drinks.
My take on the day: We have added some paddlers to the ranks of those who feel just a bit more comfortable and just a bit safer than they did yesterday. Mission accomplished.
Thanks to all for coming out and getting wet.
Until next time--

I would like to thank everyone that pulled this event together. We had great conditions, great paddlers, and I for one learned a lot of new skills and got a lot of practice in. My poor arms are still reminding me of the fun. I can hardly wait to get out there and play around some more.
La Jolla Shores is just a great place to paddle. It is getting a little full this time of year, but I always look forward to spending some quality time with the great paddlers of SDKC.
A special thanks to Mike and Inyz for opening up there home to a bunch of soggy and sandy paddlers and feeding us all. The post paddle conversations were great, and the food hit the spot!
This is the second time I have paddled with this fine group in La Jolla and even though it is a bit of a drive for me, I am never the longest commute there. It seems to always attract folks from a good distance, and I can tell you that it is worth the drive. The small surf is a pleasure to play in, the clear warm waters are a pleasant break from the Red Tide up North and the sharks, rays and schools of fish are great entertainment.
I have to admit that after pigging out at Mike's house I was a bit sleepy on the drive home. Well, what better way to wake up then to stop at Dana Point and put in a couple of miles? Besides I needed to rince the sand off the kayak. :) It was windy and choppy, but was great fun, and I felt very relaxed with my new skills from earlier in the day.
Thanks all!!
