08/14/05 Kailua, Oahu

After working for a sub-contractor for the Navy finally paid off. Had to go to Oahu to assist in a software install and some user testing. Unfortunately, the back end software ran into some trouble, so I had a little free time to kill. So up the windward side of Oahu I went looking for some paddling. I found an outfitter in Kailua. They basically run either a guided tour from the beach at Kailua out to the Mokolua Islands or you can paddle the route solo. I went for the solo route. They only rent SOTs, so I took it an experiment to see how the other half lived ;) ( I own a Chilco back at home. )

The launch was actually from a canal, since they can't drop off at the beach. After a small portage of over the sand, the ocean launch was trivial. The ocean was around the entire island was flat that week, so there was nothing to be concerned about during the crossing. The water was warm and clear. The first stop was Flat Island. which really is flat. After a quick look around, I headed off toward the main islands.

There was only a slight trade wind blowing so I opted to cruise over the reef to get a better look at the fish and turtles. After about a 30 minute paddle, I landed on Mokolua.

I did a small hike around to the ocean side of the island to enjoy the view. I then I broke out the snorkel gear. The disposable camera is currently at the film developer, so that will have to wait until next week. The digital photos are up at (http://homepage.mac.com/ chrisgriffith/PhotoAlbum70.html), but no kayaking shots. The snorkeling was fine, but Hanauma Bay was better.

The paddle back was fairly straight forward. I did spend some time cruising along with a sea turtle.

One thing is for sure, the waters here in San Diego sure do seem cold. ;)
