The weather was beautiful with azure blue skies and wispy white clouds. We took pity on the poor folks who reside in cold and frosty parts of the country because it was another lovely spring day in Southern California.
We paddled the 6 nautical miles to Treasure Island and engaged in friendly chatter. As we neared Treasure Island, we were fortunate enough to spot a pod of 3 or 4 dolphins.
The landing on the beach went smoothly since Treasure Island is such a protected cove. Several of us took the opportunity to visit the 5-Star public restrooms and gardens that are part of the Montage Resort. In the meantime, Duane put on his sexiest skull cap and executed various rolls in his snazzy red Point Bennett kayak.
I decided to practice Duane’s tips for launching. While I was positioning myself on the beach, Ken’s kayak was hit by a small wave and barely missed my bow. Finally, Dublin Dave decided to give me a hand. As he pulled me into the water, my paddle got stuck in the sand and I was up-the-proverbial-creek without my paddle. I guess I’ll have to go back to Duane’s website for refresher course.
The return trip was pleasant and uneventful. To pass the time, we discussed every hot news item. We dissected the news, offered various opinions, and second-guessed everyone and everything.
As we neared the jetty, Dublin Dave decided to take a shortcut and skip the 2-mile trip to the channel. Duane, Ken and Dave H. couldn’t resist the challenge and paddled over to take a look. Duane landed on the rocky beach and scoped out the portage situation. He finally aborted and returned to the water. Dublin Dave, Ken and Dave H. bailed out and left Duane stranded on the beach. Of course, Duane was able to catch up in no time at all. It’s a good thing that everyone decided to do the full distance, because Henry and Kathy were going to disqualify anyone who took the short-cut for failure to complete the designated course.
After cleaning up and making ourselves presentable, we walked to The Brig. We were so hungry we gobbled our burgers and fries in a frenzy. It was another great day of paddling with a good group of folks.
