We headed North up the coast, ending at the power plant, took a brief break, then headed back down toward CIH. Conditions changed somewhat at this point, with the air becoming cooler, a slight wind developing, and 3-4 foot swells developing. Nothing to write home about, just an interesting change. About half way back to the harbor, Ron, who routinely paddles, and keeps up with George Miller, took off and was gone. It was at this point that Len and I spotted a large, brown water animal, about 30 yards seaward of our location. I felt it was too large to be a seal or sea lion, and Len saw the blow-spray. As we approached the harbor, we spoke with a couple other paddlers who were lingering by the entrance. They told us a 20-foot whale surfaced right by their boats, then continued heading South INSIDE the breakwater.
Once in the Pond, Len and I hooked up with Mike Kory and Peter?, where they were practicing rolls and chatted with us for a bit. Len then brought my attention to the tall ship that had just entered the harbor. Two of these beauties were taking passengers out of the harbor and back all morning. We turned on our turbo thrusters and rounded the jetty rocks to catch up to the floating piece of history. It was a perfect end to a great paddle. Len and I then grabbed some lunch at (hold your ears) Bakers Square.
