Squidless and Whaleless in La Jolla
This morning at 9:00AM four of us San Diego paddlers launched from La Jolla Shores. The group consisted of Kevin "Dr. Paddle", Dennis Hyndman, Thom Underwood, and I. The high, spring tide prevented vehicles from driving on to the beach as is usually permitted. We shared the launch with a whale-watching group lead by Aqua Adventures.

In light of the fog that crippled the Buick Open at Torrey Pines the last couple of days, we were armed with GPS' in additon to our normal safety equipement. We paddled due west and then headed north to a point off of Torrey Pines golf course to see if we could see some whales.

We could see the fog off shore but it never hindered us. There was a surprising amount of wind 2.5 miles out and slight chop made the paddling a bit harder as we headed up the coast. For the second straight week, I almost saw a whale. On our return, we paddled just outside the surf line. There was an offshore wind that kicked up some spray in the surf line. There was a mixed swell as the waves broke at different angles.

We had no carnage, just a good workout paddle with good scenery. Our only disappointment was that we did not see the Aqua Adventures group so we could lie about seeing scores of whales.
