Dana Harbor to Treasure Island
Two of us met at Dana Harbor and launched promptly at 0900. The harbor, flat
as usual, was somewhat contrasted by the choppy open sea with a mixed swell.
Just enough to keep life interesting but not threatening. We took a very
coastal route enjoying the beautiful rocky areas along the coast line with a
couple of very mild incursions between some of the larger rock formations.
Along the way we met several familiar faces and exhanged greetings arriving at
Treasure Island at about 1040. We refueled and refreshed just enjoying the
great weather. We were soon joined by three other paddlers (sans PFD's, sans
pumps, two sans water--sometimes I wonder...). After a short conversation we
launched to head back. After clearing the reef guarding the sheltered beach
we engaged in a little impromptu rescue practice--under 45 seconds from first
contact to skirt being fitted! Not too shabby for the mixed swell and
currents prevailing.
Along the way we were treated to the sight of a large blue herron on the
cliffs above and several seals. The currents were mixed; at one time giving
us a great push from the rear then seemingly pushing us back as we approached
the harbor sea wall.
