The tidal exchange was huge and the current was very strong. I would say up to 6 knots on the north side of the channel. The swell was only about 2.5 feet, but was running straight into the channel - no real risk of hitting the jetty (hard). We got a lot of good surfing in the channel and just outside the mouth, but the swell direction also allowed surfing waves right at the inside edge of either jetty. Surfing right next to the rocks gives an exaggerated sense of speed that makes it even more fun. Most of the waves were 3-4 feet, with a few 5-6 footers, and maybe one or two above that. No helmet man took a short swim, but seemed unperturbed (he was wearing dry top & dry pants). Otherwise there was a lot of flipping, but all followed by good rolls. No carnage, just fun.
Hugh summed up day best when he said (roughly): "I have no idea why this is so fun, but it is loads of fun"
