Practice Session at The Pond
Peter O'Sullivan, Lee Hyde, John Peterson, Chris Wood, and I launched at 9:00 for a practice session in the pond. After we paddled over there, Peter landed so he could wade into the water to help me with my rolling. What seemed effortless two weeks ago which was the last time I paddled seemed to have left. I finally managed to do about 4 good rolls, but I was very inconsistent and was having trouble doing what Peter kept telling me to do. He was just about ready to slap me up side of the head with the paddle. (gr). I'm sure glad he has a lot of patience.

Then we were joined by 3 new paddlers. Rosalio Trejo (Leo) on his Scrambler XT, who just started paddling and a young woman and her son Michael on a Malibu Kayaks Pro Tandem 2 (my CRS is kicking in and I apologize that I can't remember her name).

Shortly after that, John P decided to head for Ventura Harbor on his own. About 30 minutes later, the fog started to roll in. I called John and he said he was going to continue for a while but that he'd join us for lunch. As the fog got worse, Lee and Peter went for a trip around the breakwater.

Our new tandem paddler's son was a little uncomfortable in the fog and they decided to head back. Chris, Leo, and I escorted them back because we didn't feel comfortable having anybody paddle by themselves in the fog especially with all of the Sunday power boats that were racing home to get out of it.

Leo, Chris, & I then headed back for the pond. Peter called on the radio and we linked up. Leo was game for paddling outside of the breakwater and we decided to go around it. The wind was picking up and there were a few whitecaps and some interesting clappotis. Leo handled it well. Peter and Lee told us how they met someone on a Hobie pedal kayak who was out of his boat when they went around. A small fishing boat was helping him but he was trying to get back in the kayak feet first. He did not have a paddle with him and he didn't speak any English. Neither Lee nor Peter were fluent enough in Spanish to be of any help. Finally the guy did get back in his boat and peddled back to the pond.

We then paddled back, and had breakfast and/or lunch at Daddy-o's.

All in all a good time for all, but a mentally frustrating one for me. Next week the roll comes back!!!
