The group consisted of Generous George Miller, Sensitive Steve Holtzman, Jolly Jake (from Florida), Personable Peter O'Sullivan, Jovial John Ernst, Prudent Paul Johnaston, Lusty Len Goodman, and me. We were also joined by a delightful young lady, named Pamela, who drove all the way out from Las Vegas to frolic on the water with us.
We met bright an early at Kiddie Beach in Oxnard and spent at least 55 minutes admiring each other's paddling attire. Len won our vote for being the most fashionably dressed as he was gaily decked out in a bright aquamarine spray skirt, a slightly off-colored PFD, and a muted tan/black pair of paddling pants - all of which perfectly complimented his nearly translucent, passionate pink kayak.
All our launches were flawless through the dumping 2 inch surf. Then we paddled leisurely out to "the pond" behind the breakwater. After taking a few minutes to admire the pristine white sandy beach and to wave to the friendly fishermen, we decided to boldly head for the wide open ocean. But when we peeked around the end of breakwater, we saw that great mother ocean was a little too lively with these enormous fifteen inch swells splashing all over the place and getting us all damp. And the 4 mph wind was just howling!
Paul prudently decided that it would be wise to turn around and head back into the harbor. During our little chat about what to do next, Peter brought up the prospect that the wind was possibly going to get even worse. So we all agreed that we should join Paul so the he wouldn't feel lonely. In almost no time at all we all scurried back to join our friend.
We spent the rest of the morning gliding gracefully amongst the splendid yachts and sail boats moored in the luxurious Channel Islands Harbor. The only disappointment of the day came when we discovered that none of us had thought to bring a fruit platter, wine, and cheese to share during our break at the back of the harbor. This has served as a bitter lesson learned; so hopefully next time these knuckle-heads will be better prepared.
